Problems with your garden pond

9. You think someone's stealing fish from your pond

You may laugh, but yes this does happen! Koi carp in particular can acquire huge value and believe it or not can be targeted by fish criminals... Ok this doesn't happen too often but in the UK at least there was a spate of fish crime last year.

Quite often, by the time you've noticed someone's been filching your fish, it's too late. It's unlikely koi criminals will return to the same spot for fear of detection. So if you do have valuable fish in your pond it's worth being slightly paranoid and asking yourself if they might be at risk.

If your pond is easily accessible from a road or far from your house you'll be more at risk than if you've got a small garden pond near your house. You might want to consider an alarmed fence. This will not only deter potential thieves but will serve the additional useful purpose of scaring away any potential predators such as herons or cats.

Alternatively, if you have a large pond and you suspect you have a frequent visitor to your pond, why not consider some sort of camera system. You could invest in a cheap cctv system or even an infra-red triggered still-camera system (the sort that wildlife photographers use). The advantage of this system is that the flash fired by the camera is likely to deter any thieves from visiting again, plus you'll have valuable evidence to take to the police.
