Encouraging Wildlife to your pond

So, you've built yourself a pond. Or maybe you've had a pond for a while that you need to inject some life into. What do you do next? How do you let frogs and insects know that you're pond's there? Apart from posting a note on the amphibious internet, your best bet may be to give your pond habitat a little helping hand...

Frogs

Frogs can be a great guest to invite to your pond party. They're fun, kids love them and they taste great too! (Only joking) But they're not as common in the British Isles as they used to be. Gardens are getting paved over to make way for driveways, patios, and more houses; more cars on the roads mean more frogs are getting squished and, hey, people just don't seem to care about the poor little critters as much as they used to.

All this means that it's great if we can try to give them a bit of a leg-up. Just one more frog in every pond in the country would mean a lot more frogs - well, approximately 6 million at the last pond count. So, just how do we go about introducing Jeremy Fisher to our newly built hole in the ground. Well, at this point it's worth thinking back to your childhood. Do you remember the excitement of trawling ditches and streams with a jam-jar. No? Well I do & it's a great fun thing to do, and I bet your kids would enjoy it too. Ok, it's not quite as good as Playstation 3, but as far as good old-fashioned healthy fun goes you'd be hard pressed to beat it this side of the bed sheets.
